Overview

Founded in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University, Tohoku University is a premier national research institution located in Sendai, Japan. As the third national university established in the country, it has spent over a century operating under three core principles: "Research First," "Open Doors," and "Practice-Oriented Research and Education." These values have guided its evolution into a global leader in science and technology. In late 2024, it achieved the distinction of being selected as Japan’s first "University for International Research Excellence," an initiative backed by a significant government endowment. The university is a large-scale institution comprising 10 undergraduate faculties, 15 graduate schools, and three professional graduate schools covering Law, Public Policy, and Accounting. Known for its historical commitment to inclusivity, Tohoku University was the first Japanese university to admit female students and has a long history of welcoming international scholars. Today, it continues to modernize its infrastructure and academic offerings to cultivate global leaders capable of addressing 21st-century challenges.

Tohoku University is a research powerhouse, hosting six major research institutes including the Institute for Materials Research (IMR) and the Institute of Fluid Science. The Research Institute of Electrical Communication (RIEC) is world-renowned for historical contributions such as the invention of the Yagi-Uda antenna and pioneering work in optical communications and spintronics. The university also hosts the Advanced Institute for Materials Research (AIMR), a member of the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI). To promote interdisciplinary and international collaboration, the university established the Tohoku Forum for Creativity (TFC) in 2013, the first international visitor research center in Japan. Other specialized centers include the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), which focuses on disaster risk reduction and resilience. The university is currently developing its Aobayama Campus into a "Smart City" hub and Science Park to foster university-launched ventures and industry-academia co-creation, continuing its tradition of "Practice-Oriented Research."
