Overview
Singapore Management University (SMU) is a premier autonomous university in Singapore, established in 2000 as the nation’s third university. Modeled after the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, SMU positions itself at the nexus of management, social sciences, and technology. The institution is led by President Professor Lily Kong and Chairman of the Board of Trustees Mr. Piyush Gupta.
The university is known for its American-style, broad-based curriculum delivered through small, seminar-style classes capped at 45 students. SMU emphasizes interactive and project-based learning, offering a "guaranteed second major" policy that allows undergraduates to combine disciplines across its various schools. Its mission involves providing a holistic education, supported by a Core Curriculum built on the pillars of Capabilities, Communities, and Civilisations.
Location
SMU is located on a 6.4-hectare city campus that is uniquely integrated into Singapore’s central business district. The campus is situated within the Bras Basah arts and heritage precinct, providing students with an urban setting that blends academic life with the city's professional and cultural hubs. Key facilities on campus include the Li Ka Shing Library and the Kwa Geok Choo Law Library.

Campus Culture
Student life at SMU is characterized by an interactive and collaborative community. The university supports over 150 student clubs and societies, spanning sports, performing arts, and various other interests. Residential life is centered around the Prinsep Street Residences (PSR), which offers a communal living-and-learning concept for both local and international students. The student body of approximately 13,330 includes a significant population of over 3,700 postgraduate students.
A defining feature of the SMU culture is its commitment to social responsibility and global citizenship. SMU was the first university in Singapore to formalize community service, requiring a minimum of 80 hours for graduation. Furthermore, global exposure is a graduation requirement, achieved through exchange programs, study missions, or overseas community service. The university also emphasizes experiential learning through the SMU-X curriculum, where students collaborate on real-world projects with industry and government partners.
Notable Alumni
SMU boasts a global network of over 60,000 alumni. In 2025, the university celebrated its Silver Jubilee by launching the inaugural SMU Alumni Awards to honor excellence within this community. The university's postgraduate programs have successfully placed PhD graduates at prestigious global institutions, including Monash University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and City University of Hong Kong. Additionally, the Lee Kong Chian School of Business is specifically recognized for its high graduate employability.
